PROS:

-Pretty good suction probably comparable to the Roomba 980 (I’ll refer to it as the 980 from now on).
-Nicely sized dirt bin – maybe 25% bigger than the 980.
-Cleans the floors slightly faster than the 980 thanks to it’s very wide brush and more efficient navigation.
-Cleans hard floors and the tops of carpets very well – The 980 struggled with dog hair on carpets.
-Simple yet effective phone app with the ability to manually drive it.
-Improved lithium ion battery gives good run times – 90 minutes on turbo and 120 minutes on eco.
-Good navigation but not perfect. (see below) Overall a more efficient and smarter cleaning path than the 980 but more likely to get stuck.
-Effectively cleans corners and tight along edges thanks to it’s square front end and the brush is only 1/2″ away from the right edge of the robot.
-$200 cheaper than the 980.
-Less harsh sounding than the 980.
-Lights out vacuuming unlike the 980.
-Smoothly and properly follows along walls where the 980 tends to bump along them much more.

CONS:

-Doesn’t dig out the fine powdery dust and dirt from carpets nearly as well as the 980 due to the brush being designed to only skim the very top of floors.
-“ultra high performance” filter impossible to keep clean unlike the 980’s filter. I ordered Neato’s “high performance” filters and they are much easier to clean off with a seperate vacuum.
-No double pass or edge clean off options like the 980.
-More likely to get stuck in tight places and may require more furniture adjustment than 980.
-No option to change how fast it moves but neither does the 980.
-Imperfect navigation may try backing up walls in tight areas and some corners.
-No auto carpet boost like the 980.
-Exhaust blows almost straight back and may blow dust/hair around behind it.
-Can tend to follow along certain walls and chair/table legs multiple times but the 980 does this too.
-Magnetic boundary strips can be pushed around by the vacuum if you don’t tape them to the floor and they’re an eye sore.
-Already noticeable scratches on side of bumper, scratches on glossy finished dirt bin, and one scratch across the top turret. The 980 is more durable when it comes to scratches.
-Less reliable track record than Roomba although I’ve had no mechanical problems with either so far.

Botvac Connected

I bought this robotic vacuum a couple of weeks ago form a different retailer because Amazon wasn’t stocking them yet. I had heard of robo vacs before, but always just kind of perceived them as a novelty device that couldn’t possibly serve any real function. Many of the reviews of earlier generation vacs supported this view. However I was intrigued and after spending some time researching what was currently on the market I ultimately decided on a Neato due to its apparently more “intelligent” navigation as opposed to the somewhat random logic of the competitors, as well as the cleaning results I had seen from the Botvac D series. I went with the Botvac Connected because I like the idea of communicating with the botvac remotely and because the Connected is the only Neato that comes with a Lithium battery. Plus it was on sale at the time.

Botvac Connected vs Roomba 980 vs Xiaomi Mi. Xiaomi Mi wins!

PROS:

First one I ordered came up and kind of noticed some weirdness on the cleaning patterns, went thru my knowledge and made a little research, used about a month but month after it was almost self destroyed; it was hitting walls, corners etc. too many times and too hard that made me aware of something wasn’t right, cleaning patterns weren’t the same as it was advertised and shared in public reviews, month after I finally was able to say that my first order was defective because the intelligence level wasn’t quite there and battery wasn’t lasting enough to complete 2600sqft home vacuuming on turbo mode.

Does all it says it will; better than expected…with one flaw

I LOVE this vacuum. I have 2 larger dogs that shed like a mofo. This, honestly, gets more hair that I do when I vacuum. I’m not very meticulous with my hand pushed so I’m not sure what that says…but after running it and then running my dyson pet after the dyson does not pick up any additional hair; which is pretty amazing considering it costs just about the same and I have to push it myself. There are a few cons I’ll note below, but I didn’t dock stars as it does it job very well and the cons are only slight inconveniences and don’t really affect it’s function. The features are way more advanced that of the the other leading brand so while I considered giving 4 starts I decided it gets that 5th for being more feature rich and about 2/3 the cost.

which is great since I travel a bunch

It’s a very effective vacuum cleaner, and it’s oddly heartwarming to receive a notification at work telling you that your house has been vacuumed. The bin is large enough for it to run more than once before it needs to be emptied, which is great since I travel a bunch. Works well on both hard floors and carpets, and can deal with my two bedroom apartment without needing to recharge in the process. I also appreciate the eco mode, which reduces power consumption and noise at the cost of it not picking up quite as much – I typically run in eco mode with occasional runs at full power.

I think Neato finally got it right!

Over the past five years or so, we’ve had three Neato robotic vacuums, including this BotVac Connected. The first two eventually bit the dust due to a failed laser (which causes the robot to not know where it is), and a failed LCD display. I have subsequently had one of them repaired to use in our patio area. For the record, this repair (of the laser) costs about $130. I don’t necessarily think there is anything inherently wrong with the robots. We literally ran them seven days a week. Two Beagles, a Coon Hound, and a Siberian Husky demanded it. But I digress.

Exceeds my high expectations

I purchased my first Neato robot vacuum many years ago. It performed well, only requiring replacments batteries every few years. The LCD screen recently died on it and, while repairable, I decided to upgrade to a Botvac Connected. This top-of-the-line model may seem pricey at first glance, but after a week of cleanings, I feel it’s worth every penny.
